Curriculum

At Oakfield, we believe it is every pupil’s right to expect excellent teaching of an enriched and engaging curriculum, in a safe learning environment, which will enable them to reach their full potential life. The curriculum is both board and balanced and promotes the spiritual moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils and in addition prepares pupils at the school for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.

All students follow the National Curriculum. The national curriculum is a set of subjects and standards used by primary and secondary schools so children learn the same things. It covers what subjects are taught and the standards children should reach in each subject. More information can be found at:

Interventions

The school offers various intervention programs:

  • Lexia is taught to all Key stage 3 pupils. Lexia is a web-based Independent Learning System with several programs. It is predominantly phonics-based, beginning at initial letter level, and includes a simple comprehension element. Pupils work through a program independently and at their own pace. The computer keeps track of their progress (records can be printed off) and provides extra practice on aspects which pupils find difficult.
  • Maths Symphony is taught to all Key stage 3 pupils. It is a web-enabled program with a visual and highly intuitive interface. Through every stage of the program, students gain a strong foundation in underlying principles and become better equipped to take on basic and advanced subjects Students move at their own speed and learn how math works.

Both interventions are tailored to suit the needs of each individual pupil. The Maths and English teachers liaise with the intervention staff to ensure that the work covered in the sessions are suitably challenging.

In addition:

  • Toe by Toe is offered to individual pupils on a one to one basis. It is a highly systematic page-by-page and step-by-step series of activities in one book. It deliberately takes learners right back to the beginning of phonics and works up from there, based on the observation that many learners with difficulties seem never to have got the hang of phonics.

Oakfield is an accredited exam center of AQA, OCR, EDEXCEL, WJEC, NOCN, NCFE, BCS, Duke of Edinburgh’s AwardNIBAS and Princes Trust.
